She now has a book out entitled Pole Position:Is Stripping for You (And How To Stay Healthy Doing It) According to the jacket it is for: women interested in developing their own life narratives, they will explore how writing their lives and discovering their selves is all part of an ongoing process.
Then it went viral, and at the time of this writing has over 3,000 shares on Facebook alone.

In the summer of 2008 I was planning a roadtrip through the upper midwest, and Williston was one of my potential stops. Many of my superstripper friends have made Whispers a stop on their stripper circuit. So, it’s not the first time I’ve heard about the oil money in western North Dakota.

SuperStripper Bubbles who has worked at the club in Williston posted some very relevant observations on her own blog, titsandsass appropriately tagged under the topic “silly media coverage.” I agree that the publicity is great for the clubs, especially since (as I recall) they typically only had about 3-5 dancers on a shift, and each dancer had to commit to a one week booking. Kudos to Whispers, I’m sure this article will entice at least a few hundred dancers to brave the minus 40 degree weather to live in bumf-ck for a week…only to discover that the urban legend of $2000/night Williston stripper is as real as the urban legend of the $1000/night Vegas stripper.

A part of the Red Tape Chronicles, MSNBC is showcasing what people are doing in this double-dip recession to make ends meet. If you have set foot into a strip club in the las..oh…4 years, you know that many of the women who work in these establishments have degrees or are using dancing to fund their post-graduate studies. My biggest comments are bolded and italicized: Carla obviously needs some sales training!

Originally posted at http://redtape.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/09/12/7730301-lawyer-turns-topless-dancer-to-pay-the-bills

When Carla graduated 10 years ago, she thought her law degree would be a permanent ticket to a high-paying job. But instead of selling her mind, Carla is selling her body. After student loans, debt, a layoff and unemployment battered her bank account, she now finds herself in an almost unbelievable position – dancing in a topless bar.

“Did I ever think I’d be taking my top off for rent money? No. I was in my mid-30s and had never danced before,” said Carla, who asked that we use her stage name and withhold her identity and some personal details. “As a little girl, I never thought to myself, ‘I just want to grow up and be a stripper,’ or, ‘All I ever wanted to do in life is climb in the lap of sweaty stranger and take my top off.’

“But, with our economy the way it is, especially in smaller cities … you strip or you starve,” she said.

Last month, as part of our coverage of America’s economic malaise, we chronicled the story of a young father who took a job as a firefighter in Iraq after he couldn’t find work in Miami. Then we asked msnbc.com readers: What crazy things are you doing to make ends meet? This is the second of three reader stories we’ll share. Last week, we wrote about a man who has turned to dumpster diving to keep food on the table for his three children. Now, we tell Carla’s story.

Carla grew up in the Midwest and moved to the West Coast in the late ‘90s to fulfill her dream of earning her law degree. After graduation, she worked for nine years putting her degree to use, but she had entered the crowded legal profession at the wrong time. When she was laid off in 2009, she couldn’t find work.

“At first, I worked as a waitress, and a cashier in gas station,” she said.

‘Act of desperation’
As her prospects grew dim, she went back to school to earn a master’s degree, hoping to bolster her credentials. But her financial aid came in lower than expected, her credit was battered and she struggled to find part-time work in her new town to keep her afloat.

“I went around to see if could get a job as cocktail waitress, but there was not a single retail or waitress job. No one was hiring, except for the topless places,” she said. “It was an act of desperation.”

She started out serving drinks as a waitress, but moved quickly to dancing “because that’s where the money is, and that’s what I needed.”

On an average day, she earns $20 an hour, but on a good weekend night, she might pull in $50 an hour –enough to get her finances back on track. She can set her own hours, which means she can squeeze in reading and writing papers around her work schedule.

”Sometimes it sucks, it’s degrading and I hate it, but it is necessary right now and I’m glad I have the option of doing it,” Carla said. “My parents and a few friends know and they were horrified at first. But now they are proud of me for sucking it up and doing what I have to do.”

Carla has her limits, as does the topless bar she works in. She stays away from private rooms even though women can make $500 to $1,000 a night there.

Local rules allow lap dances – as long as the patrons don’t touch the dancers – and Carla sometimes performs them. The bar doesn’t have a full nudity license, and that’s just as well with Carla; she’d need a personal license to work at a place like that and she wants no record of her temporary stint in the dancing business.

Carla hopes she’ll be finished with dancing in about six months.

“While I am proud of making a living by any legal means available to me, I realize that some will think of me as just a glorified legal prostitute and I would very much like to move on with my life and career at the earliest available opportunity,” she said.

Ugly moments
Despite these precautions, Carla said she has had her share of ugly moments. Not all men follow the rules; some have tried to overpower her and “grab her, bite her, kiss her, or get their hands under the bottoms (I) wear.” Bouncers come to her aid, but they can’t be everywhere all the time.

“I’ve had men overcome me,” she said. ”Luckily help has arrived and nothing has happened. But I have been scared.”

Carla agreed to talk about her experience in part because she said it has been profound – in one sense, the job is less hostile than any law office she’s worked in, she said. Coming from the cutthroat legal profession, she has been stunned by the camaraderie among the women she works with.

“I thought the other women I worked with would be competitive and not supportive. We are ‘fighting’ over the same dollars,” she said. “But my female coworkers are the best coworkers I’ve ever had.”

Many are in the same situation she is, she said: forced by their economic situation to perform work they would have never considered in the past.

“I work with war widows, a nurse, a med student, women who have had to go to work to save their home after their husbands have lost their jobs, and others who do this as a means to an end and who do not fit the profile of junkie/prostitute/dancer. … What we all have in common is being in a tight spot financially and living in an economy that provides limited options right now, ” she said. “I’d be willing to bet that there are women like me working in it all over the country, out of necessity and not because our goal in life was to appear topless in front of … creepy guys.”

She’s also been horrified by the way dancers are treated by some men she encounters.

‘Some real creeps’
“I was shocked at how horribly some men treat us. I realized that I was much more naive than I thought I was,” she said. On the other hand, the bar and its patrons sometimes surprise her. “While there are some real creeps that come in, there are also some very sweet guys who are regular customers and who I genuinely enjoy knowing . The stereotype that says that only dirty old men frequent nudie bars is incorrect.”

She gets asked out often, she said, in situations that would be amusing if they weren’t so sad.

“Men aren’t quite as sneaky as they think they are,” she said. Even in a strip club, they try to convince her that they aren’t just hunting for sex. “They think their motivations are transparent, when they aren’t at all.”

Believe it or not, she said she feels lucky, because she has a male friend at school who’s in a similar financial situation, “but there’s no male equivalent to what I’m doing. At least I have the option,” she said.

She says she’s been humbled by the experience, too.

“I am no better than the next dancer by virtue of my education or previous work experience. The universe has a funny way of putting a person in their place,” she said. “I have learned that I still have a lot to learn about life but now I have some incredible female mentors who continually inspire me with their courage and work ethic.”

She’s also learned to “never say never,” about things you may do in life. She’s almost finished with school, and hopes to stop dancing soon, but figures that “realistically, I’ll probably have to keep dancing until I get offered a full-time job. Which means I’ll be doing it for another six months, at least.”

When she does take a new job, she’s leaving the medium-sized city she’s in, with no plans to return.

“I cannot wait to start my life over elsewhere doing something different but I will always be grateful for the lessons I’ve learned dancing and will never again look down on anyone who works in this industry,” she said.

If you are new to dancing, or want to become a stripper, you are going to have to understand the sales process. It can easily be broken down into an easy to follow format. In this article we will cover the very basics of how to structure the conversation so that you can get him to say YES and invite you to sit down. All you have to do is remember to pick out the right conversation starter!

The first thing that must be addressed is that under most circumstances, you should never walk up to a customer and say “Wanna Dance?” Even if you are smoking hot, the chances of him saying yes are not in your favor. The only time “Wanna Dance” is appropriate is when the DJ is playing the last 2 or 3 songs of the night before the bar closes. Otherwise, every customer deserves a little bit of courtesy, and a one minute conversation will make him like you more. “Wanna Dance” also leaves it wide open for a “No” response.

Other lines you do not want to use are: “I need to make some f@$%in money…you wanna dance or not?” “Prove that you’re not cheap and get a dance, otherwise I will think you’re cheap.” “You must be gay if you’re not gonna buy a dance from me” “Buy me a drink, will ya?” “Do you want some company?”

Instead, you are going to choose one of these opening lines. Notice how all of these opening lines are phrased as questions. There is a reason for this. When you ask the question, you should also nod your head “yes.” This is a very subliminal tactic that works! Try it! Remember to make these your own and add to the list. Never let one customer within earshot hear your opener on someone else and use the same one on him.

* My feet are killing me, do you mind if I sit down for just a minute?

* You look like you need some entertainment, huh?

* You need me to snap you out of your boredom, huh?

* I was hoping I’d get to talk to the best looking guy in the room!

Our studies have shown that when you use the right opening line with the right guy, you will increase your sit down rate and close more sales!

Sit down rate without good openers: 1 out of 10

Sit down rate with good openers: 3 out of 10

Sit down rate with good openers on right guy: 5 out of 10

Sit down rate on the right guy at the right time: 7 out of 10.

I was recently asked by one of my students who worked in a full-nude club if it might be a good idea to start working in a topless club owned by the same company in her city now that she turned 21 and was legally able to do so. Not knowing if there would be a difference, we decided it might be best to help all of our readers with the answer as it is a common question we receive.

There are many things to understand between the two different working environments for dancers. One is not necessarily better than the other and like any situation, it is what you make of it. There are, however, many different types of opportunities in the different types of clubs and how you use these different opportunities can make a big difference in your income levels. More than any other difference between the two working environments is the different types of customers that come in. The types of clientele depends on the types of dancers, and the types of dancers depends on the clubs and their policies.

In the vast majority of cases, full-nude clubs do not serve alcohol. There are always exceptions to this, and yet overall, this is the general rule (for example, there is one club in Las Vegas, the Palomino, which is not governed by this rule because in their zoning location, they were in business before this law was put into effect). The reason for this is that to serve alcohol, the staff of the club must be over the legal drinking age of 21. Some clubs have managed to get around this law by having the dancers wear plastic wristbands designating them as underage although this policy is becoming a dying breed as laws are changing across the country to no longer allow this. Understanding that their dancers are able to work at 18, 19, or 20 years of age, the clubs figured a niche that allows them to cater to a crowd more interested in full nude instead of topless women. This combination is what creates a much different experience for the customer, and as a result draws a different type of patron.

Of course since the dancers in full-nude clubs can be under 21 (because no alcohol is being served) so customers can be as well. Understanding this, many full-nude clubs design their clubs with a younger audience in mind. The Deja Vu club chain is a perfect example of this. Many of their clubs are designed to cater to the “Frat Boy” type of customer rather than the upscale one. They feature shower shows, have x-rated magazines on the tables, etc. So think about the type of customer this type of club is catering to. They are usually younger because the club will admit them if they are under 21. They are most likely right out of high-school or are in college and most importantly, they have little expendable income.

This is an extremely important point to make. Men going into a club at the age of 45 is a much different type of customer than one going in at 18. At the age of 45, or even 35, most men have established jobs, a regular source of income, and a larger budget for buying dances than most 18 year-olds do. They have more expandable money in their life than someone who is working on paying for books the next semester. Of course with more money comes with more discriminating tastes and why would someone go to a club to get juice or soda when they can get a Corona or a martini?

There is another issue the age gap brings up for customers also. In our program, we talk extensively about the dynamics of the age gap and how it effects sales. Many people assume that younger is better in this industry when in fact nothing could be farther from the truth. This isn’t to say that if you are 20 or 21 that you have no chance of making money, and yet it is also important to understand that our studies have shown quite conclusively that the prime age group for exotic dancers is between the age of 28 and 35. The main reason for this is actually quite simple.

Imagine your 45 year-old customer. Who do you think he would rather have the company of as far as an exotic dancer, an 18-year old or a 30 year-old? Contrary to what many might think, it’s the more mature 30 year-old woman, not the college freshman girl. Keep in mind that for most middle-aged men, a dancer who is sitting on his lap trying to sell him an exotic dance is comparable to his young daughter at home, and on that psychological level it can be extremely uncomfortable for a man to want to buy a lap-dance from a woman so young. The other issue that is raised with the age gap is the ability for a young dancer to gain rapport with a more maturely aged customer. Let’s face it, at the age of 28, we are much more mature and able to carry a conversation with another person than we are when we are 18. As anyone knows who has attended one of our classes or has been reading our newsletters for a period time, it is the level of conversation you have with your customer that sells dances, not how cute a dancer looks in her schoolgirl outfit.:)

So if you have been pondering one type of club over another, be aware that they generally draw in a different type of customer. One is not necessarily better or worse than the other, it is just that the opportunities are different in the two types of clubs. There is a reason that in most major cities, the topless (and hence, alcohol serving) clubs significantly outnumber the full-nude (and non-alcohol serving) clubs. The reason is because they cater more to a man’s desires and those desires might be an opportunity for you that you may not have considered before.

Stripping: Some of these famous names found it was a stepping stone in their career

1. Anna Nicole Smith
Anna met her octogenarian multi-billionaire husband while working day shift at a Texas strip club called, Gigi’s.

2. Courtney Love
Graced the stage of Jumbo’s Clown Room in Hollywood before she toured the country with her rock band.

3. Channing Tatum
It was discovered that the G.I. Joe star used to shake his money maker when someone (thankfully) posted the AWESOME VIDEO on US Weekly’s website. His stage name: “Chan Crawford” Nice, dude.

4. Lady Gaga
Before she was ripping up the pop charts, she was a lady of the night ripping up the strip clubs. She told UK’s News of the World: “I was working in strip clubs when I was 18. Girls from my background weren’t meant to turn into someone like me. I come from a wealthy Italian family, went to a good school. You’re meant to live with Mom and Dad until they die.”

5. Amber Rose
Amber Rose already has a stripper name so it’s hard not imaging Kanye West’s main squeeze twirling around a stripper pole. Though back then, she only went by “Rose” on the stage

6. Jenna Jameson
Jenna Jameson’s career went from dancing at The Crazy Horse to owning an Adult Video company, to acting in somewhat mainstream movies.

7. Nadya “Octomom” Suleman
The Octomom admitted to stripping “just for one night”. Her stage name: “Angelina”.

8. Carmen Electra
Before the Baywatch beauty washed up on the Los Angeles County beaches, she used what God gave her to make it rain singles. She recently even released her own signature brand stripper pole.

9. Diablo Cody
It’s no secret that the Juno scribe was once a Minneapolis strip club dancer. Hell, she still goes by her stage name. And she’s not in the least bit ashamed. She told Esquire: “I’ve incorporated the pasties into my business wardrobe.”

10. Tila Tequlia
She reportedly told King-Mag.com: “When I was 18 and still in high school, I was a stripper for a while, because I was trying to save up money to move to Hollywood to become this bisexual Hollywood starlet that I am today.”

Even if your career path isn’t Hollywood…you don’t have to feel like you are “stuck” in the strip club. Use the experience as a stepping stone towards your dreams and ambitions.

It’s August. Just one more month of summer and business will start picking up. This will be the last installment of the Traveling Dancer Series of articles. All in all, the best advice I can give any traveling dancer is be prepared…so lets cover the essentials.

WHAT TO BRING

The first topic is clothing. In Phoenix, many of the dancer boutiques are open until 10pm, and some are open 24 hours. One of our DancerWealth students told me that she went on a tour of clubs throughout the Midwest and never once did it occur to her that she couldn’t shop for shoes or a new outfit at 3 AM when she was in Sioux City, Iowa! If you tend to pack light, think again! Pack plenty of costumes/outfits and be sure to bring at least one gown. Having a variety of costumes will ensure you will always have something suitable to wear, especially if you are planning to hit several clubs in different cities. Also bring more than one pair of shoes, nothing will put a damper on your night quicker than having to wear flip flops with your sparkly gown. Know the g-string laws for the city you are visiting: most cities have size regulations and others actually require dancers to wear two pairs! Check the weather, even in August you may need a light jacket and jeans if you visit places up north!

Not all clubs have a house mom, so some of the creature comforts you may have at your club at home may not be available. Pack extra medicinal items such as Advil, band-aids, deodorant, tampons, cosmetics, hair products, soap, shampoo, etc. Yes, even Fargo, ND has a Walmart…but do you want to spend your profits on stuff you already have in your bathroom?

.
RULES OF THE ROAD

I met a dancer from Portland once who freaked out when she came to Las Vegas. In Portland, all lap dances by law had to be 12 inches away from the customer. She came to our live class and while in Las Vegas, figured she would work at one of the many clubs Sin City had to offer. I spoke with her the night after her first shift and she told me it was almost impossible for her to get used to how much high-contact the dancers in Vegas have with the customers. When you are traveling to other cities, research the laws before you arrive. Many cities now are making it mandatory for exotic dancers to have special licenses, so be prepared to spend time and money obtaining these licenses if needed. In addition to the laws, you should also find out what the club policies are and where you want to work. Two good FREE online resources are Stripperweb.com and Exoticdancernet.com

I remember last year I was in Tulsa, Oklahoma and decided to see how clubs out there operated. I was shocked to see that at exactly 2 AM, not only did all alcoholic beverages stop being served, but all existing alcohol was to be confiscated as per the laws of the area. I’ve never seen anything like how the bouncers would walk between the tables with flashlights looking for hidden beer bottles. It was amazing. Interestingly enough, as a way of motivating the customers to stay, the club brought out a huge breakfast buffet which was free to all customers. They called it their ‘Legs & Eggs Special’. So before going to any unfamiliar location, be sure to inquire what the local rules are for exotic dancers or for the clubs themselves so nothing will be of any surprise to you when you arrive and start working.

TRANSPORTATION & EXPENSES

When planning your trip, be sure to research your hotel carefully! Last summer I booked a room in Dallas very close to the strip clubs. Little did I know, that the clubs are all located in a relatively shady part of town. After checking into my room, I met up with one of my students for dinner. When I told her where I was staying, her eyes opened wide and she said “No, we are getting your stuff and you can sleep on my air mattress!” Another time I booked a room in North Jersey, which was supposed to be 20 minutes from Manhattan. Well, it was during the World Series and that “20 minutes” translated to one hour to the George Washington Bridge…and then another hour from the bridge to the club!

As you are working on your trip, be sure to save receipts for any expenses. This includes house fees, hotel room fees, cab rides, etc. If you are staying in your destination city for work and pleasure, just keep the receipts for the days you worked as you can itemize the trip in this way. These receipts will be used later for income tax deductions and will save you tons of money later on.

HOW TO SELL
One of the best selling techniques in the exotic dancing world is to not look like everyone else in your club. Being a stranger to the area, you may be more prone to being treated unfairly by the other club staff including the other dancers. After all, you are the ‘new girl’ who is perceived as the person who has come in to take the money away from the local or house dancers. However, being from another area can add a whole mysteriousness to your persona so take advantage of it! Understand that a dancer in Los Angeles with a New York accent can draw lots of positive attention. It’s different and out of the norm. In most cases, your customers may be attracted to something they normally wouldn’t encounter so be sure to use your unique qualities to your advantage. Also, be sure to have your DJ introduce you as being from a distant location. It makes you sound more important and unique when you can be introduced as being, ‘all the way from Scottsdale, please welcome…’. On the flip-side of this, you can also use this to your advantage in the rapport building process. If you encounter other Arizonans, you have a natural ice-breaker to talk about if you are from the same distant city.

Again, the best advice I can give any traveling dancer is be prepared. Use your difference as an advantage, not as a disadvantage, and you’ll be the hit of any club you work at.

Last week we discussed whether or not it was “worth it” to travel and dance during the slow season. Since that article was published I have listened to a lot of conversations both in the dressing room and in online stripper forums and chat rooms. If you haven’t found them yet, online forums like StripperWeb.com and ExoticDancernet.com are great places to network and communicate with like-minded dancers who are willing to invest their time and money towards improving their skills.

One forum conversation recently caught my eye. It was a typical post for this time of year from a relatively new dancer who wanted to know what city had “good money” right now because her club was slow. If you have been dancing for any amount of time, you probably understand that summertime is generally a slower season for most strip club markets. Although there may be lots of bachelor parties in May and June (since June is the most popular month for weddings) much of the business clientele is taking vacations and weekends off to spend time with their families. Since our industry thrives on business travelers, conventions, and corporate meetings (most of which is planned during Sept-May) summertime can be spotty. This is magnified even more in winter tourist areas like Florida and Arizona when the temperatures scare away most tourists, and locals flee the heat on the weekends.

So what should you do? Should you believe the banter in the locker room and book a trip to a different city and HOPE it lives up to the locker room hype? Well I have a few words of wisdom if you find yourself getting caught up in one of those locker room or forum conversations

1. If you are in the locker room, no matter what you “hear” about a particular city in another state it’s usually exaggerated. This is especially if the person telling you is drunk and/or exhausted at the end of a bad shift.
2. If you take that information from the drunk girl in the locker room, and then go onto an online forum to ask about that particular city… someone from that town will respond “no it’s bad here too!” because she doesn’t want her club overrun with traveling dancers.
3. If you are a top earner in your home club, or are working on becoming a top earner with the information you have learned in DancerWealth…are you comfortable leaving your home club and NOT having the social capital you worked so hard to establish? You know first hand that the support staff in the club will hook up their regular girls first.
4. There is no Magical Club that is super packed on a Tuesday night in July with guys just ready open up their wallets and go to VIP. If there was, you can be sure it’s not going to be public information on a free stripper forum.

Here at Strip and grow Rich, we do have a few strategies to help you get through the typically Slow Summer Season…ready?

The first and probably most effective is to remember to Maintain Your SuperStripper Zone when you are working in your club. In order to control your money, you have to be able to control your emotions. If you aren’t able to control your emotions, you will end up in a negative spiral. Have you ever done this: suppose someone says something that you can normally brush off…but for some reason you make a bigger deal out of it? Then after a while you get to the point where you are so negative that you are not able to identify the money making opportunities when they present themselves? Negative emotions like feeling frustrated, disappointed, or angry are normal reactions but if you just feel that way and don’t take action on the message those emotions are trying to tell you…you will not make money! Isn’t that why you are in the strip club in the first place? In DancerWealth we teach you strategies on how to identify and control these negative emotions and STOP that negative spiral before it starts.

Second, if you decide that you DO want to get out of town and try a new club, but you want to minimize your travel costs and be sure to work at a nice club…consider SuperStripper Boot Camp. We have relocated to Dallas,Texas and will be holding events this summer to help you hone your SuperStripper Skills while making money at night. The Dallas economy has held up pretty well during the current recession, and even though summertime is still considered to be “slow” in Dallas, it is rockin’ in comparison to other cities.

I worked a few shifts with her last week at The Lodge, and like anywhere in the summertime…the locker room was full of “Woe is me….I only made $100.” Personally, I didn’t do THAT great. She kicked my butt in terms of dollars earned. Yep, that right…Avalon the SuperStripper doesn’t always make the most money in the house. I must also admit that I’m rehabilitating a back injury, so I was not “In The Zone” any of the nights I worked.

So, what do ya’ll think?
