A good friend sent this to me today. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned the past few years is that no person is an island. There is no such thing as a self-made successful person. As independent contractors we get so stuck in the concept of being independent. Independence is a good thing, but if you go through life alone, you can only achieve things within your own grasp. Interdependance, is when the product of two or more independent efforts achieve things that no one could have accomplished on their own.
Look around you, examples of interdependence are everywhere. At the club, it’s not as easy to just show up, not know anyone, and still bank without having social capital with the security staff and/or VIP hosts. Another example is this site and the educational services we are now able to provide to the industry is a product of Adam, Donovan and I. Not a single one of us could have done it alone.
Stand by Me
Four years ago while walking down the street in Santa Monica, CA the voice of Roger Ridley singing “Stand By me” was heard from a block away. His voice, soul and passion set us on a course around the world to add other musicians to his performance. This song transformed Playing For Change from a small group of individuals to a global movement for peace and understanding. This track features over 35 musicians collaborating from all over the world. They may have never met in person, but in this case, the music does the talking.
