Freedom

“Money is one of the greatest instruments of freedom ever invented by man” wrote economist Friedrich von Hayek in his 1944 masterpiece, The Road to Serfdom.  “The great thing about money is that you can spend it as you wish.  I might even be argued that the ability to earn and spend money freely is the single quality that most clearly distinguishes a free man from a slave.”

A slave has everything he needs to live: food, shelter, water, medical care.  And of course, he is never unemployed.  The one thing he lacks is choice.  A slave does not have the option of saving his money to one day tell his boss, “I quit.” He cannot buy a newer, bigger house.  He cannot change doctors.  Whatever arrangements his master makes, the slave must accept.

Many people are deluded into thinking they can rely on the government “safety net” to save them from poverty.  But how are government handouts different from slavery?  Food stamps will only buy certain foods.  Housing credits will only provide section 8 housing.  Medicaid will only pay for substandard care.  Like the slave owner, the dispenser of government relief reserves the right to determine how resources are spent.

As more white collar jobs are outsourced to India, 21st century Americans are faced with a hard choice.  They can beg for government assistance, or go out and earn freedom through entrepreneurship.
