I was very suprised at the low attendance at this year’s Nascar event. It has been my experience over the past 5 years, that the Fall Race Week at Phoenix International Raceway is an event that produced unrivaled strip club attendance. For years, I have seen the same groups of guys fly into town from all over the USA for a long weekend of golf, cars, and dancing girls.
Some of the same key groups were present: most notably the potato heads from Idaho. Mr Potato Head (who just happens to be the main supplier of potatoes to McDonalds) flies everyone down here on his jet every year for a long weekend of male corporate bonding, team building, etc. I met Mr Potato Head last year on Sunday night after the Nextel Cup Race. He told me how our door guy (last year) was a total prick and wouldn’t let him in because he didn’t meet the dress code. Now, that makes absolutely no sense to me because Mr Potato Head doesn’t strike me as the type that would be screened at the door (middle aged white guy in a polo shirt, shorts and sandals???) But why would he make something up like that? And why would he keep harping about it for the first 20 minutes of our acquaintance?
So last year he took his millions to Skin Cabaret instead…and the ONLY reason he stopped back in CCP after the race was because he had 2 hours to kill before his pilot landed to take him home. We sat in VIP for two hours until his pilot arrived. I guess I left a good impression because he came back with his army of potato heads last night (and tonight, and probably Sunday too!)
Notably missing however are the plethora of rednecks who drive in from Texas, New Mexico and Southern California. Also missing were the upper middle class guys who would fly in from the Midwest and Great Plains states. The group from Alaska also no-showed this year. So last night just looked like any ordinary Friday night….not the crazy busy NASCAR weekend I was expecting.
Amazing what steep oil prices, rampant foreclosures, and the impending recession can do to strip club attendance. I was lucky that the potato head army remembered me from last year. I’m lucky that I have 8 years of sales experience and 5 years worth of social capital built up at Christie’s Cabaret.
It feels like late 2001 all over again, except this time its the housing bubble that is bursting. Did you know that 1 out of every 3 dollars produced in the Phx economy is from real estate. What happens when you take 33% of the existing cashflow out of circulation? EVERYONE’S profits decline. Even strippers.
I’m not worried though. I was a profitable stripper through the recession and bear market of 2002-2003. I know what to expect.
I have my game plan. Do you have yours?
