Philosophy, Lust, and Religion

Early last night it was slow.  So slow that I took the time to sit down and philosophize with a customer, fully aware that it wasn’t going to result in a sale.

“Oh honey, you’re a looker, but I can’t get a dance.”  Jeb said matter of factly.  Jeb was in town from Houston.  “I’m just here to enjoy the scenery, but I could never disrespect my wife by getting a lapdance.”  He said handing me a dollar.

“Thank you for the tip, but you’re kidding yourself if you ACTUALLY think that lusting after a woman dancing 6 feet away from you onstage is any different than lusting after a woman who is dancing 1 foot away from you.”  I replied matter of factly.

“Oh.  You’re one of those psychology strippers arent ya?”  He asks.

“I studied psychology it in college, yes.”  I told him.  “And I use it every day in this place.  All guys come in here for the same reason: to blow off time and steam.  Whether or not they spend money depends on something entirely different.”

“So tell me.  I’m trying to wean myself off of these places.  My wife hates the fact that I go to titty bars, but I just can’t help it.  So in order to appease her, I don’t get lapdances anymore, but I tip the girls who are working hard onstage and the ones that take their time to talk to me.  Is that so wrong?” Jeb asks handing me a twenty.

“Well right and wrong is all relative to your situation.  There is no absolute”  I told him.  “Strip clubs are not legally wrong because they exist and any member of the public can walk in the door.  However if going to strip clubs causes a problem in your relationship, then yes it’s wrong.  Its just like alcohol.  Having a drink isn’t a bad thing.  However if drinking alcohol has a negative effect on your ability to maintain quality relationships with the people you love then yes it’s bad.

Like it or not, men like to look at beautiful naked women.  Even if they have a beautiful naked woman at home, they will still look at a different one.  It’s just raw animalistic nature.  Animals have an innate sense to mate with as many partners in their species as they can in order to diversify the gene pool and populate the earth.  You can try to fight it, but that would be a losing battle…just look at religion.

Most of the major religions have taught us that humans have higher intellect and are able to “turn off” this innate overwhelming desire to procreate.  Most religions preach that you should only have one partner.  Not only should you hold off on sex until you find that one special person, but then never have sexual relations with anyone else ever again.  And if you’re Christian you should be more afraid of the alternative….burning in Hell for entire damnation….(unless of course you’re Catholic, then you can just confess each week and do it over and over again).

Well, the one partner ideal is fantastic for building strong family units that go to church together.  It would work really well if everyone did what their religion told them to do and just shut off their hormones.  But just look a quick glance at demographic statisics tells us that no one: rich or poor, black, white, hispanic or asian, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish or Mormon is following this sage advice.  For the first time ever there are more single households than married households.  50% of first marriages end in divorce.  66% of second marriages also end in divorce.  A nuclear family with mom, dad, and 2.5 kids is an anomoly compared to the majority of blended families.

Maybe strip clubs are the answer for some men who are trying to “shut off” their hormones.  It’s a safe medium where they can indulge in looking at pretty girls, but yet they won’t abandon the vows they made.  They know that they’re not going to go home with the girls, but it provides them an opportunity to pretend….even if it’s just for 3 songs that the fantastic female specimen dancing seductively in front of him is just waiting for him to indulge in that animalistic instinct…
